Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has allocated 1.6 billion rupees to establish 160 model farms across the country, to be owned and operated by young agri-entrepreneurs.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has taken steps to allocate 1,600 million rupees to establish 160 villages in 25 districts, with 6 youth agri-entrepreneurship villages in each district,” stated Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

“Arrangements have been made to provide one million rupees to each village under the first phase.”

The Minister highlighted that the program aims to attract youth to agriculture and introduce them to modern agricultural technology, enabling them to target both local markets and exports.

The initiative will involve the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, and plantation crops, as well as the harvesting of fish and production of livestock products in the villages.
