India’s PhonePe unveils UPI payment in partnership with LankaPay

LankaPay – Sri Lanka’s National Payment Network on Wednesday announced its partnership with PhonePe – one of India’s most popular fintech apps – towards accepting UPI payments at LankaQR merchant points.

The launch was graced by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha who highlighted the key role played by fintech connectivity in the overall connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. Addressing the gathering, Guest of Honour Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, acknowledged the collaboration’s capacity to unlock new opportunities and enhance competitiveness and the benefits that it would bring to Sri Lankan merchants.

PhonePe International Payments CEO Ritesh Pai said: “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with LankaPay. This collaboration offers unparalleled convenience to Indian tourists who can now use a familiar and secure payment method while traveling and pay across LankaQR merchant points. PhonePe has always been at the forefront of driving innovation in payments. We are incredibly proud to be driving UPI adaptation across India, and our expansion to Sri Lanka is another exciting step forward.”

LankaPay CEO Channa de Silva CEO said: “LankaPay is delighted to collaborate with PhonePe to revolutionise the cross-border payments between Sri Lanka and India. This partnership is bound to provide greater convenience to Indian tourists and business travelers in making seamless UPI payments at all LankaQR merchant points in Sri Lanka via PhonePe app. We are excited about the potential of this collaboration that would enhance payment experience to Indian tourists and business travellers during their stay in Sri Lanka and also provide the merchants with a cost-effective proposition to card payments. I envisage that innovation to be the cornerstone of this alliance and would lead to further strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.”

At the launch, de Silva also made an insightful presentation, giving a snapshot of Sri Lanka’s digital payment landscape followed by an insightful panel discussion on ‘The Future of Digital Payments in Sri Lanka: Opportunities for Sri Lankan Businesses,’ which focused on the possibilities and growth avenues for local businesses.

The session featured National Savings Bank GM/CEO Shashi Kandambi, Hatton National Bank PLC COO Sanjay Wijemanne, LOLC Finance PLC Chairman Conrad Dias, and Dialog Finance PLC Chairperson Renuka Fernando, who discussed how businesses can leverage digital payment technologies and tap into a wider market to stay competitive in an evolving economic landscape. The session was moderated by LankaPay CEO de Silva.

Following the panel discussion, PhonePe International Payments CEO Ritesh Pai unveiled insights on leveraging UPI for global markets and the growth prospects it offers for merchants.

The event also saw the presence of several key stakeholders from the Sri Lankan financial landscape, including senior representatives from banking sectors, payment system providers, and representatives from tourism sector and business associations. This alliance is facilitated through LankaPay’s partnership with NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL).

During the event, PhonePe announced that its app users travelling to Sri Lanka can now make payments using UPI across LankaPayQR merchants nationwide. Users can simply scan LankaQR code to make secure and quick payments without carrying cash or calculating currency conversions. Their account will be debited in INR, showing the currency exchange rate. These transactions are facilitated by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and LankaPay National Payment Network.

Colombo, Sri Lanka – POP Culture Festival 2026 concluded successfully at Port City Colombo, marking a turning point for Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry, and setting a new benchmark for world-class festivals in the country. With an international EDM DJ line-up who have all performed on Tomorrowland stages, it was a World Class line-up performing on a massive World Class stage.

Held on the 28th and 29th August, the two-day festival brought together an outstanding lineup led by world-renowned artists Alan Walker, Nicky Romero and South Korean pop (K-pop) sensation CHUNG HA. They were joined by several leading international and Sri Lankan artists, creating a powerful celebration of music, youth culture, creativity and live entertainment.

POP Culture Festival 2026 was brought to life by ShowUp Entertainment and Elephant House Cream Soda, united by a shared vision to elevate Sri Lankan entertainment, empower the country’s next generation of talent, and to create a platform capable of connecting them with the world.

From spectacular performances and world-class stage production, to the incredible energy of the audience, the festival transformed Port City Colombo into a vibrant international entertainment destination.

The festival also featured performances by DubVision, QUINTINO, Dyro x DANNIC, Mintthy and a selection of emerging and established Sri Lankan artists, bringing global stars and homegrown talent together on one extraordinary stage.

POP Idol: Developing Sri Lanka’s First Global-Level Idols.

A defining part of POP Culture Festival 2026 was the POP Idol programme, a groundbreaking initiative created to discover, develop and introduce the next generation of Sri Lankan performers.

From thousands of applicants across the country, talented young performers were selected and guided through a professional development journey that included auditions, intensive training, performance preparation and mentorship. The programme was designed to develop not only vocal and dance abilities but also stage presence, discipline, confidence and the professionalism required to compete on an international level.

Through this journey, POP Idol introduced a new generation of solo performers and a girl group developed to global entertainment standards. Their appearance on the POP Culture Festival stage represented far more than a debut performance – it marked the beginning of a new pathway for Sri Lankan youth with ambitions of reaching international audiences.

By providing international professional trainers and the opportunity to perform alongside globally recognised artists, POP Idol demonstrated that Sri Lankan talent has the potential to stand confidently on the world stage.

A Platform Taking Sri Lankan Young Talent to the World

POP Culture Festival is more than an international music festival. It is a long-term platform created to identify, develop and showcase Sri Lanka’s young creative talent to the world.

By bringing global artists, an international-level production, and emerging Sri Lankan performers together, the festival created opportunities that extends beyond a single event. It opened the door for young musicians, dancers, performers, creators and entertainment professionals to gain experience, build visibility and pursue opportunities within the global industry.

Created by Sri Lankan youth and driven by the spirit of The Young World Order, the festival showcased the ambition, creativity and potential of a new generation determined to take the country forward.

The successful delivery of POP Culture Festival 2026 demonstrated Sri Lanka’s ability to produce ambitious, world-class entertainment experiences while creating meaningful opportunities for its own talent. It also strengthened the country’s potential to become an important entertainment and festival destination within the region.

POP Culture Festival 2026 did not simply bring world-famous artists to Sri Lanka. It created a stage from which Sri Lankan talent can reach the world.

The festival may have ended, but the movement it created, and the journey of Sri Lanka’s next generation of global performers has only just begun.

Nations Trust Bank records PAT of LKR 15.6Bn in 1H 2026 following strategic acquisition

Nations Trust Bank PLC (NTB) reported a strong performance in the first six months ended 30th June 2026, recording a Profit After Tax (PAT) of LKR 15.6Bn.  Following a PAT of LKR 4.6Bn reported in Q1, the Bank’s performance accelerated significantly in the second quarter with operations commencing 1st May 2026, with the successful acquisition of HSBC Sri Lanka’s retail banking business, with an overall asset growth of 26% and a one-off tax credit attributing to the acquisition.

With the successful acquisition and integration of HSBC Sri Lanka’s retail banking portfolio in May 2026, the Bank consolidated it’s position as the market leader in credit cards and premium retail banking services.  A continued focus on service excellence, digital transformation, and disciplined risk management contributed to NTB’s strong first-half performance.

NTB’s performance is supported by healthy asset growth, stable Net Interest Margins (NIMs) at 5.58%, and disciplined risk management resulting in a Net Stage 3 Ratio of 1.05%. Return on Equity (ROE) increased to 31.33%, reflecting the Bank’s enhanced scale and earnings momentum following the acquisition.

Milco records Rs.1.49 Billion profit in 2025

State‑owned dairy company Milco (Pvt) Ltd achieved a historic financial turnaround last year, recording its highest‑ever net profit of Rs.1.49 billion by late 2025, according to Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne.

Deputy Minister Karunaratne told Parliament last week that the recovery enabled the company to halt privatization plans, clear debts, and extend unprecedented financial benefits. 

On December 31, 2025, Milco disbursed a performance bonus of Rs.75,000 each to all 1,228 employees. In addition, Rs.180 million in profit‑sharing incentives was distributed among 22,000 dairy farmers, marking the first such payout in 21 years.

He further said that Milco had previously accumulated Rs.3.5 billion in bank loans and Rs.1.7 billion in outstanding payments owed to milk‑supplying farmers, but all debts have now been settled.

He further announced that the long‑delayed Badalgama milk factory project will recommence, with capacity to process up to 200,000 liters of milk daily. 

Plans are also underway to upgrade the National Livestock Development Board’s farm in Nikaweratiya, with an additional Rs.1 billion budget allocated to supply high‑yield dairy heifers and male stock to local farmers.
