Sri Lanka has to register providers of crytpo currencies as part of requirements of international anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing framework, Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe said.
A mutual evaluation is coming up next year.
The central bank has also discussed setting up a task force on the matter with the government’s digital ministry, he said.
Sri Lanka has to identify and know about crypto currency use to counter money laundering, he said.
Users of cryptocurrencies also faced other legal hurdles including Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange laws, Governor Weerasinghe pointed out.
In Sri Lanka people cannot freely transfer money abroad except for current transactions.
