Sri Lanka was the world’s third most expensive country to purchase a vehicle in 2021, with prices averaging 1.75 times higher than the global average, according to World Bank data.
The Advocata Institute attributed this to high import duties and restrictive government policies, which they say have significantly limited vehicle ownership and hindered economic mobility.
